Meet Mike D'Arcy, our First Team Manager

Mike Darcy.jpg

Where have you previously managed / coached?
My main coaching / managing background is in grassroots junior and youth football. Being successful results wise in the last two seasons at u15 & 16s with a 3rd place finish in a very competitive Bristol league and back to back Somerset Cup Finals with Sporting Weston. In the 23/24 season, I started the season transitioning my u16 team into senior 1st team football at Sporting Weston but after 14 years of coaching needed a short break away to recharge the batteries and evaluate what’s next.

What is your football style?
Possession based and playing out from the back like most modern managers. I believe that regardless of individual talent the team has to be better than the sum of its parts and working hard for each other.

What are your ambitions at Winscombe?
Short term league wise to be competitive in our division.  Last season was outstanding for the team.

Bones, his coaching team, players and everyone involved did an amazing job to gain promotion.

Cup wise,  I think we all dream of going to a cup final!

What have you seen at the club that you like?
What’s not to like.  Everyone has been so welcoming. It’s a great set up here with fantastic facilities.  The junior and youth section is thriving and the growth of the senior section over the last year has seen the club go from three to four teams including the vets team.

What are your plans?
To build on the success of last season.  The club have already seen a number of u18 players transition all the way through the junior section into the first team and senior football and I would love to see us have that as our tradition.  There were 9 under 18s involved in the senior section last season and it would great to see that rise this season.

Which football team do you support?
I was born in Wythenshawe (Manchester) so naturally I’m a United fan.

Who is your favourite player of all-time?
King Eric, the man was pure class, literally transformed the club I love into a winning machine.

The current best player in the world is?
Pains me to say it but Rodri.  His ability to read the game, destroy attacks when defending but then pick opposition defences apart with his passing is unbelievable and then he has then cheek to score match winning goals in the biggest games!
